Exploring Japanese Incense
How can one convey an ancient art of scent to another? By sharing the experience itself, along with intuited geometry.
A set consisting of six curated sticks of incense, within custom designed packaging, accompanied by a small booklet.
The booklet contained historical background and usage tips, and specific details and notes for each scent. Enough information to give context to someone experienced, or a starting place for someone new. It was printed on a lightweight textured paper mirroring the delicate nature of the incense. Icons were designed for each stick as a visual representation of the scent based on the emotions and feelings brought about by it.
One challenge was how to contain and protect the fragile incense without custom manufacturing or using large amounts of plastic. The solution was multi-colored, hand-folded, heavy card. One sheet was folded in a way which resembled a corrugated board where the incense could be nestled. Another sheet was used as a band to keep each piece in it’s correct spot. Two more sheets outside of this added the final strength needed, and required the user to unfold them one at a time, creating a pacing to match how much time goes into creating the incense itself.
